My ‘Profit Engine’

In May 2008 I launched my first eBook on ClickBank and over the course of the following 6 months my eBook sold 300 copies making me around $3000.00

A ‘by-product’ of this process was a list of around 1,000 subscribers.

Back then I was very focused on the information product as the money earner in my business and I wasn’t really sure what I should be doing with my list.

Anyway, in January ’09 a marketer I respected launched a new product and I decided to send an email to my subscribers recommending the product.

One week later I had banked just short of $4,000 in commission from this one promotion and I realized that the real ‘profit engine’ of my business wasn’t my eBook at all but my subscriber list.

Now I know how frustrating it can be when big, guru marketers preach about the ‘real money’ being ‘in the list’, I used to read their musings and think “Hey, that’s all well and good when your list is 50,000 but how do I make ‘real money’ with my handful of subscribers?”

Well, I am not one of those ‘big, guru marketers’

my list isn’t 50,000 strong (or anywhere near that number)

But I do make ‘real money’ from my list and today I want to share a simple plan that you can follow to do the same.

Step 1

Buy your name as a dotcom domain (for example ‘stuart-turnbull.com’ — I had to insert the hyphen because ‘stuartturnbull.com’ was already taken)

Step 2

Get your domain hosted (I use and recommend d9 for my domains and hosting, you can get 10% off by using the coupon code “Stuart Turnbull” here www.d9.com)

Step 3

Create a free WordPress blog on your domain (Not sure how to do this? here is a step by step guide with my compliments www.wordpress2website.com)

Step 4

Step 5

Post about your internet marketing experiences to your blog (aim for 2 or 3 posts per week).

Now, please don’t think you have to be some kind of ’expert’ or ’authority’ before you can post, check out the early posts on my blog (see ‘archives’ in the right hand sidebar) if you don’t believe me.

Right now Aweber is an anchor to me and I'm trying to jump this dang river so I'm off to have a look at listcrew.

And after reading your post I feel like finishing off my book on STP – Smile Transfer Protocol – so I can have some food to feed my "people" when they start to show up.

Your post offers some excellent advice and tips and as someone who is not into the the technical side of things yet, I found it very helpful.

I have downloaded your wordpress blog set up guide as my own techie has informed me that he is soon to retire, which means I will HAVE to learn a lot of things that are alien to me. Your step by step guide will prove invaluable in that respect.

As John mentioned, it's nice to see someone proving that money can be made in IM, and that you don't have to be a big player to do it.

Very interesting Stuart. It's not very often you see real numbers about earnings that seem attainable. Thanks for that. It's encouraging to know Internet Marketing DOES provide an income.

Well done on getting 300 sales with your first eBook, that must have been a humdinger of a subject.

I have been SLOWLY gathering names with Aweber. I know the value of lists, I DID have a list of 50,000 when I was in the direct mail business. It always earned me 3 times what I spent on it. i.e. I used to spend £70,000 a year on print and postage, and the income/gross profit was £210,000 (one year it was £320,000)!

I like Internet Marketing because I can miss out the £70,000 bit.

You know my blog is all about Obesity and Perfect health. I have all the ingredients you mention execpt aweber.Do you recommend my putting it on this blog or just creating a page or setting up another just about internet marketing?

What do you suggest?

Just to clarify, Aweber can be used to manage your list in any niche. If you are getting traffic to your blog you really should be capturing those email addresses and building your list.

List Crew is only for blogs and websites in the IM niche. If you want to blog about your IM experiences I would recommend creating a new blog on a separate domain.

I'm impressed. After this comment I'm going to get that piece of kit. I have the first 6 steps, have for ages but I have never had a list. Do you count people who buy from e bay as part of your list? If you do well, I didn't know, so they will have slipped away.

I joined John Thornhills Masterclas. Have finished the trial last week. Excellent, I knew stuff, but I know a hell of a lot more. Anyway, I'm off to have a look at the listcrew.
