What Inspires You?

Inspiration is a funny thing….

… as long as you aren’t looking for it, inspiration whallops you in the head on a continual basis.

But once you are trying to grab it at will, it seems as elusive and as rare as the famed “jack-a-lope“….

To harness the true power of inspiration, you just need to learn to pay attention….

Blogging, product development, eBay auctions and sourcing are ALL times that inspiration makes a better bedfellow than perspiration.

Although the famous Thomas Edison quote says:

“Genius: 1% Inspiration & 99% Perspiration”

I beg to differ on this……

Why?

When one is faced with a blank sheet of paper, a blank web page, an empty canvas, even a new file in your favorite software program you are beginning with nothing.

Making something from nothing is hard… it’s alchemy… it’s perspiration and it takes work!

Sometimes a whole LOT of work….

What if you could stumble into success a little faster,

That’s what our Print Sorcery *PROOF* Guides are really all about… they are about helping to inspire you in your quest for success in this fabulous business model.

What inspires us?

The inspiration for our very first guide came from an email newsletter that Debbie gets from a public domain images blog – BibliOdyssey.

The blog post was dated May 22nd and it featured Arthur Rackham’s wonderful artwork that was published in the book “Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens”.

Debbie had never heard of Rackham and fell in love with his work.

We launched our first *PROOF* Guide featuring Arthur Rackham on May 26th… just four days later.

 

What about selecting the actual books to buy?

In “Print Sorcery” we teach you how to find profitable prints & the books they come from.

My video series teaches advanced research techniques you can easily perform yourself.

In the preview videos, you can watch me over my shoulder as I find and source the book:

As I show in the video, I actually DO buy the book.

It finally arrived at Deb’s house.

She has taken out the prints and trimmed them to a proper mat/mount ready size.

We will be listing 4-5 of the prints this weekend.

Watch for the results of all our test auctions; including selling “as is” or matting the prints first.

We are also going to be testing whether auctions or fixed price listings yield higher ending prices and better sell-through.

    Hi Stuart,

    great information. I don’t have this book, but in Post I’ve get some good information. Thank you for this. I saw that you have great books too on site. I must read them in next 14 days … and then I must decided, will I’ll start on eBay or not.

    Hello Stuart

    I purchased the Gustave Dore guide, and as always it is good value for money.

    One thing puzzles me, you quote the number of plates a book can give, but nowhere in the Addal description does it tell us this.

    For instance, the book by E Cobham Brewer, the Addall description just states Beautiful Plates, but you say there were 399 plates. How do you find this out, or do you have to buy the book first and just hope that there is a good number of plates?

      Hi John

      Thanks for your comment!

      When researching a book on Addall.com you will get several pages of results and each bookseller will describe their book in a different way. If you study the descriptions carefully you will be able to glean all of the information you need.

      One bookseller may describe the size and date of the book but omit to detail the number of plates. Another seller may give very comprehensive info about the plates but omit the publisher’s name etc. So by gathering a fact here and a detail there you can build up a full picture without buying the book.

      If after studying the descriptions there is still a gap in your knowledge simply click the book title (on the left of the Addall search list) and there is usually a “ask the bookseller a question” tab enabling you to email the seller directly.

    Could you please provide information on reasonable priced suppliers in the USA for the plates mats as well as the material to ship the plates once sold???

    Thank you for all the information you are providing us, it is for sure priceless.

      I’ve been busy researching and ordering samples from US suppliers (I use UK suppliers myself) and will be sharing my top recommendations based on quality and price very soon!

    Stuart! I am finding a lot of material to put up for auction in the coming weeks but also having problems removing the prints without damaging their edges. So far I have only damaged some 1924 advertizements with my efforts (their edges tend to tear but at least don’t show under matting). It’s one thing to experiment with advertizements and screw them up, but…

    Now I have some really valuable plates from a vintage set of five books in hand… and I’m frightened!

    These prints/plates are in the 80 to 100 years old range and are covered with rice paper such as a hand tinted Photogravure on French Plate Paper and another plate which is a Mezzotint printed on satin (103 years old!) and I do not want to damage them by amateurishly trying to remove them! The spines are sewn together and have glue over mesh so it is not an easy task to undertake. If I had a machine with a blade in it large enough to cut off the spine (once the jacket is off) I imagine I would have a perfectly cut edge but to do this by hand with an x-acto knife and a ruler just petrifies me!

    I have Prints Make Profits but that isn’t enough detail to calm my nerves!

    If you or Deb have any time please do a detailed video for us rank amateurs whose hands are trembling holding the scalpel…

      Hi David

      Thanks for your question.

      The best method for removing the plates really depends on the condition of the book and the way they are held in the book.

      Plates can be bound in with the other pages or ‘tipped in’ which means the inside edge of the plate is glued to the following text page.

      If tipped in, usually the glue is weak (because of age) and gentle pulling pressure will remove the plate. If this doesn’t work use a sharp craft knife along the inside edge.

      If the plates are bound in you can either break the binding which is often easy because of age by opening the book until the front and back covers are in contact with each other (breaking its back). The plates will then be easy to pull out.

      Or you can use the craft knife to cut them at the inner edge.

      Use a straight metal edge (ruler) and a very sharp knife!

      Remember that a mat/mount will cover any rough edges. If you want to sell un-matted then simply trim neatly with scissors leaving as much margin as possible around the image.

      I have just ordered a Flip video camera so that I can shoot some demonstration videos.

    Hi Stuart,

    Thanks for all the great info! I have begun selling prints on eBay now and just wondered if you’ve ever had people give you a hard time about calling it a “vintage print”. One guy messaged me and seemed pretty ticked off that I listed a vintage print when, as he put it, it was just a page tore out of a book. I refined my listing template to explain that these were plates (prints) carefully removed from a book, catalog, calendar or other print media.

    Anyway, just wondering if this happens to other people out there. People like you are what inspire me!

      Out of several hundred eBay print sales I have only had one return because the print was a book plate.

      You can’t please all of the people all of the time so don’t stress it and focus on the buyers who love what you do.

        Yes I know I have the manual. It is just I like to see the step by step process in video form I guess. I with a video you can see the whole process, from start to finish, where as in the manual you only see “finished” stages.

    Hi Stuart

    After buying “Prints Make Profits” first time around and doing nothing with it, your “Print Sorcery ” DVDs have me fired up and determined to make a go of it this time/

    Quick question – you tell us to do our searches on Ebay.com, but can you please confirm where you list your prints (Ebay.co.uk , with International delivery) or Ebay.com, or both?

    PS Love the “proof” guides – really making this easy for newbies

      Thanks for your positive feedback Stewart!

      I list on the UK site because that is where 90% of my buyers are based. I use the ‘international visibility’ upgrade (10p) which makes my listings visible to US buyers and I do make the odd US sale.

      You should list on the site that your buyers use and this obviously depends on your niche.
