9 Etsy SEO Myths – Fact or Fiction?

It’s time to debunk some Etsy SEO myths (or not!)

Myth #1 – The order of your tags influences Etsy search.

This myth is well and truly debunked – tag order does not matter.

Myth #2 – The order of keywords in your title influences Etsy search.

This myth is true – putting your best keywords first in your titles will help shoppers find your listings.

Myth #3 – Your description contributes to your ranking in Etsy search.

This is not true – Etsy does not look at your descriptions when ranking your items in search.

Myth #4 – Repeating keywords will hurt your rank.

This is not true – it doesn’t matter how many times you include particular keywords.

Myth #5 – Most Etsy shoppers look at the first 3 pages of search results only (before revising their search terms).

This myth is true.

Myth #6 – Etsy considers your shop policies for ranking purposes.

This myth is true.

Myth #7 – When you enter keywords in the Etsy search bar the dropdown shows the most popular related keywords.

This is false – the dropdown shows the most recently searched related keywords.

Myth #8 – Listings with a sales momentum rank at the top of Etsy search.

This is plausible – sales momentum may well be a part of Etsy’s secret search algorithm but as it is a secret algorithm we can’t be 100% sure.

Myth #9 – Renewing listings gives a bump in rank.

This is true – recency does matter to Etsy search.

Hi Stuart, My girlfriend is an artist having produced abt 70 paintings ready without frames. I have suggested selling online, maybe make some prints also. Neither of us know about above skills. Do you have a course that covers how to print as well as sell original paintings?

    Thank You

    Stephen

      Thanks for your question, Stephen!

I don’t have any personal experience of selling original art or taking prints from it but I have a few suggestions.

I recommend you set up an Etsy shop and list a few of your girlfriend’s art works – check out Your Etsy Profit Machine! for a comprehensive guide to starting and marketing your Etsy shop.

Once you have an Etsy shop you can join Etsy Teams which are groups of like minded sellers dedicated to sharing and learning with each other – click the “Teams” link at the bottom of any Etsy page and search for “artists”.

Researching how other artists sell their work is also a great way to learn – Your Etsy Profit Machine! shows you how to do this.

As far as prints are concerned, there are lots of companies online who will print from your uploaded images – canvasmemoirspro.com are particularly focused on Etsy sellers and provide a good quality product and service (I have tested them!).

I hope you find these suggestions helpful!
