The following account of my journey from novice to full time online marketer includes information that I have never shared publicly before, indeed many of my own family aren’t even aware of the details you are about to read.
Generally, I am a very private person but I believe that my story has the power to inspire others and if I can help just one person to change their lives for the better this exercise will have been worthwhile.
I got my first experience of making money online over 20 years ago when I discovered eBay.
At first I listed the unwanted stuff from around my house but it soon became apparent that I needed a regular supply of in demand items if I was to take full advantage of this new (to me) money making method.
I spent many hours researching eBay’s sold listings looking for something that I could source cheaply and repeatedly and eventually, I noticed that there was a big demand for vintage art prints. As I looked more deeply, I realized that many of these prints were in fact, illustrations removed from distressed copies of vintage books and so the idea for “Prints Make Profits” was born.
My business idea in a nutshell – identify popular art themes, buy broken old books containing the right images for a few dollars each online, remove and list these book illustrations as individual pages – sometimes I would add value by matting them and selling them as ‘ready to frame’ vintage art prints.
I built this ‘hobby’ enterprise into a very nice, income generating side hustle that saw me through some tough years after I became a widowed father of four youngsters meaning working from home was my only option.
Enter John Thornhill into my story – I had come across John’s business on eBay, I bought his eBook which opened my eyes to the life changing potential of building a digital products business. A business that didn’t require the constant buying, matting, packing and shipping of physical products as mine did. John’s business was entirely automated which meant that the link between the number of hours worked and the amount of money earned was broken.
It dawned on me that a digital products business was where mine and my young family’s future lay and when John launched a coaching program teaching his methods I was first in the queue!
I followed John’s 3 month program with my customary determination and soon had my own eBook (based on my eBay book prints biz) complete with sales page, affiliate tools and (ready to go) mailing list – all I needed now was an interested audience to sell it to!
John (again) had my back and agreed to promote my eBook to his own audience – sales started to come in immediately and my own mailing list began to grow as John’s buyers automatically (and magically as it seemed to me at the time!) became my buyers!
I went from a list of zero to over 1,000 buyers in just a few short weeks!
Suddenly, I had transitioned from a buyer of courses to a course creator and my income exploded as I focused my energy on teaching others how to replicate my eBay business rather than spending all of my time sourcing books, matting, packing, shipping etc. etc.
My life would never be quite the same again!
I’ve kept this next part of my journey to myself until today. I was never quite sure that it showed me in a particularly good light – my late wife certainly didn’t think so but hey, I think it may help you so here goes!!
This is a good example of the value of risk taking and being prepared to move outside your comfort zone.
(I accept that my personality probably sits towards the higher end of the risk tolerance scale and I’m not suggesting that you should behave recklessly but I do think that the potential return on investment often tends to increase in line with the level of risk you are prepared to tolerate).
I had also been a follower of another eBay marketer called Jim Cockrum, I was intrigued by the way he too used eBay to build his audience and he came across as someone who genuinely cared about the success of his followers.
In 2009 he offered a unique opportunity – he launched an eBay auction with the highest bidder partnering with him on a new eBook project – the winner would co-author the book, bank 100% of the sales revenue and own 100% of the buyer list (aka the real gold)!
This opportunity got me excited because I understood the long-term value of a list of buyers – having written my own eBook and building a small buyer list of my own I had seen first hand the income that could be made by nurturing relationships with an engaged audience of buyers.
Here was a world class information marketer offering equal billing on a brand-new product plus exposure to his huge audience – I knew I had to do whatever it took to make sure it was my name alongside his!
The bidding stopped at $34,500!
I had to max out several credit cards to cover it – many thought I was completely mad, but I believed in Jim and the power of his relationship with his audience.
Thankfully, I was proved right!
The project proved to be a wonderful opportunity to learn Jim’s business strategy and the resulting eBook was a big success repaying my investment in double quick time and delivering a list of around 3,000 buyers!
I’m still profiting from my relationship with these buyers many years later and I estimate that I have earned back my initial investment at least ten times over! These subscribers have proved to be incredibly loyal and continue to support me by buying my products and following my recommendations when I review other vendor’s products!
My joint venture with Jim enhanced my profile and reputation and helped build my confidence and belief in those early, formative years of my business. It was also a big contributor to the financial independence that I and my family now enjoy.
This all happened over 15 years ago and took months of hard work – today, it is possible to create your own product, sales page, promotional emails etc. in a fraction of the time thanks to the advent of AI tools.
