I buy all of my printer ink online and the website I use offers free shipping if my order exceeds 50 euros – I like free shipping as much as the next person so I often end up adding a ream of printer paper or two to my order to reach the minimum order level.
This got me thinking about different ways we can promote our Etsy shop items!…Here’s a way to increase BOTH your sales conversion rates AND your average order size too!
Offer FREE SHIPPING on orders above a certain dollar amount!
In the past, I found that offering free shipping on Etsy didn’t increase my sales BUT I concluded that in the past, “free shipping” only showed up in the listing description, shipping cost or shop announcement all of which are only visible to shoppers AFTER they click on your item in the search results
HOWEVER, Etsy now has a FREE Etsy Sales Tool that lets you (among other things) set up a FREE SHIPPING sale! Using this tool, you can…
- Offer FREE SHIPPING on ALL listings or just SOME (your choice!)
- Set a minimum # items OR minimum dollar amount to qualify for free shipping (great for increasing order size!)
- Set it for ALL shipping or DOMESTIC ONLY shipping
- Set the dates and duration of the sale! (or make it permanent!)
The tool can be located as follows… Sign into your Etsy account, go to “Shop Manager” – “Marketing” – “Sales & Coupons”.
Advantages of Doing a FREE SHIPPING Sale…
Doing a FREE SHIPPING sale has the following advantages…
- Many Etsy shoppers search with the “FREE SHIPPING” search filter turned ON.
- Many Etsy shoppers enter “free shipping” as part of their search term.
- Your listings will have a “FREE SHIPPING BADGE” on search results pages!
That 3rd one is KEY… as I said earlier, BEFORE, the only way people could SEE you had “Free Shipping” was to actually CLICK ON YOUR LISTING or SHOP!…Now they see it in the search results which make you STAND OUT from the competition!

Etsy launched its “Ultimate Guide to Etsy Search” in Sept ’18 in which it announced that Etsy search will factor shipping price into search ranking to make it easier for shoppers to find listings with competitive shipping prices. Listings with lower shipping prices are more likely to rank higher in search. Additionally they say offering free shipping could improve your search ranking even more.
