We are lucky enough to share our home with a family of house martins!
House martins are small, migratory birds who arrive every spring to build their cup shaped mud nests under the eaves of houses.
“Our” birds built their nest and laid 3 eggs which hatched on May 30th – so far so good!
On June 12th we had torrential, driving rain that lasted for 24 hours and unfortunately this caused the nest to collapse which dumped the 13 day old chicks onto our driveway.
This has happened in previous years and the chicks have died but this time, as luck would have it I discovered 2 of the 3 youngsters showing signs of life!
What to do with two 13 day old chicks that can’t be returned to their nest and need to be kept warm and fed (house martins eat small aerial insects that they catch on the wing)?
I don’t have the knowledge or skills needed to take on such a task and these birds were 2 weeks short of being independent.
Enter the wonderful volunteers who run Kildare Wildlife Rescue!
I popped the 2 surviving chicks into a box and placed the box on top of a hot water bottle and drove 70 miles to deliver them to the wonderful volunteers who dedicate their time to rescuing sick and injured wildlife!
And the story doesn’t end there – yesterday I received the great news that our 2 chicks responded well to their human carers and were successfully released a couple of weeks later!
